The mystery of Deauville and Trouville

Yesterday was our first school excursion, the mystery tour.  We had no idea where we were going; we were just given a place to meet in the morning and a list of things to bring for the day.  When we arrived at the train station at 8:20 in the morning (yes that was horrible), we were given a packet describing our destination the fun things to do there.  Trouville and Deauville are two adorable towns in Normandie famous for their beaches and Casinos.  Trouville is a fishing town which is apparent as soon as you cross the bridge, and Deauville is home to many cute shops and the American Film Festival.  We spent the day exploring the two towns and taking so many pictures.

Trouville

 Deauville

First, we went over the bridge to Trouville and walked around the sleepy little town.  We found the beach and a place to eat on the boardwalk.  Because it is a fishing town, most of the restaurants were seafood places, so we found one that had something for everyone... or so we thought.  I ordered what I thought was going to be a cut of beef marinated in something and what I got was this....

a few slices of roast beef with a salad on top.  What the heck?

My friends Kathryn and Carolina ordered what they thought was steak but they got a hamburger without the bun.  Lovely.  The only person who got exactly what they wanted was Chelsea who ordered a pot of mussels "moules."  My dad would have been so jealous.

After lunch, we stopped for some gelato at this amazing shop and I got half coconut and half chocolate.  It was SO GOOD.

Then, we went over the bridge to Deauville to check out the film festival and that beach.  The press area was empty but it was cool to see the red carpet and everything all set up.  When we got to the beach we found out school activity leaders and they told us that Salma Hayek was supposed to make an appearance on the boardwalk.  There were paparazzi and security guards, so we waited with the growing crowd for her to arrive.  When she finally did, everyone when crazy yelling her name and snapping pictures.  I was too short so I could't see her but I just put my camera up and took a ton of pictures.  A few of them came out ok, but my roommate Chelsea got a really good one because she was able to zoom in.  That lasted a few minutes and then she left so the crowd died down.

Chelsea's picture...

We were so hot because it was almost 80 degrees and there was barely any breeze, so we decided to go swimming.  The water was pretty cold, but it felt amazing and I actually went all the way in.  We swam for a little and then hung out on the beach until it was time to get back to the train station.

When we got home, it was around 9:00 and a bunch of people from our school were going to a dance club so we decided to go.  We got ready and headed out to find it, but when we ran into some kids from school, they said it was gross and smelly in the club so they left.  We decided to follow them and try to find somewhere else to go.  We ended up walking around for a few hours with everyone before we decided to go home.  We had to take a cab because the metro was closed for the night, so we got to ride around the city at night for a little while.  The cab driver was so nice, and I got to practice my French with him while we were talking about the city and his trip to the U.S. when he was younger.  I was exhausted by the time I finally got home, but it was such a fun day and I wish it didn't have to end.
