Les Bohèmes et Café Cinéma

On Monday night, my roommate Laura and I went to an exhibit for our Art History class.  The exhibit showed the history of gypsies (Les Bohèmes) throughout art.  It was interesting  to see all the depictions of gypsies throughout history and to read the accompanying explanations of the origins of gypsies in Europe.  There was a great eclectic mix of different art styles and different portrayals of gypsies in art over the years.  I liked the way the exhibit was set up because the art was displayed chronologically, so I could see the evolution of art styles along with the changing ideas of gypsies.  There were good visual elements to the exhibit that accompanied the art as well.  They had props set up in different rooms that went along with the themes of the art in that room.  I learned a lot about gypsies in Europe and the different nationalities that were considered gypsies at different points in time.

Then, last night, I was part of the Café Cinéma at my school.  This was one of the many little cultural activities they put on throughout the semester.  We met at my school and had a short discussion about French cinema and its history.  Then, we had a fun activity where we were each given a picture of a celebrity and we had to try to pronounce their name the way French people would.  It was really funny to hear our impressions of French pronunciations and then to hear the correct way to pronounce them from our student activities coordinator who is French.  The way they pronounce stars' names like Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal are hilarious; we would never know who they're talking about.  After our little activity, we were each given a ticket for a movie at one of the popular movie theater chains in Paris.  I am excited to see a movie in French and to see if the Parisian movie theaters are much different than American ones.
