Latin quarter

Today was my first day to sleep in!!  It felt so good to sleep and I am officially over jet lag, yay!

Tonight we went to the Latin quarter which is near Notre Dame.  There are many schools located in that area so it is considered the students quarter.  There is so much to do in this area and the atmosphere is really fun.  We ate at a cute little restaurant with really good food.  Some of my roommates got three cheese fondue which was amazing.  I got a special with an appetizer, dinner, and dessert for 16 euros.  I had French onion soup, duck, and creme brûlée for dessert.

The food was amazing but I can't believe I ate it all, I am so full.  I don't know how these Frenchies eat this much all the time... and they're all so skinny.  I'm not complaining though, it was so worth it.

I absolutely love this city.

Bus tour of Paris

After orientation this morning, we had a guided bus tour of Paris.  It was so nice to just sit and relax for a couple of hours and learn some history of the city.

We also went to lunch at L'As du Fallafel, "the best falafels in Paris" and I tried my first falafel....

Coconuts and Peaches

Today we had two more orientation sessions in the morning; cultural differences and academic policies.  In the cultural differences discussion we learned some really interesting reasons behind the behaviors and attitudes of the French versus the Americans.  For an analogy, our teacher compared French people to coconuts (hard on the outside but soft on the inside) and Americans to Peaches (soft on the outside but hard on the inside).  What this means is that in America we are taught to be super friendly and to accumulate as many friends as possible.  We have a very easy time striking up conversations with complete strangers and we are supposed to be really friendly and often fake nice to everyone.  As a result, we have several "friends" or acquaintances, but not as many close friends.  We have no problem "making friends," but we keep them at bay.  We don't let most people in all the way, we hold them at arms length.
The French, however, are much more closed off to people they don't know.  They will not strike up a casual conversation with a person waiting in line at the grocery store, for example.  They will say hello, or bonjour, to a stranger and that is all.  This seems rude to Americans, but to them it is not necessary to act like they are friends with someone whom they do not know.  Once they do become friends with someone though, they become very friendly.  They open up very easily to friends and every friend that they do have is a close friend.  The difference is that in America we may have many more people that we consider friends than French people do, but the amount of close friends that we have is usually less.  It is also easier for us to lose friends and gain new ones where as the French are friends for life.  I found this very interesting and it has helped me to understand the French culture more and the behaviors of people on the streets.

Peaches and coconuts may seem very different, but both are delicious in their own way :)

Sushi time :)

Day two of orientation today was all about health and safety and about apartment living.  It was kind of boring but it was good to learn how to blend in with the local culture and not to stand out as tourists and targets for pick-pocketers.  We also had a fair that had different booths like food tasting and book renting to help us get what we need and to introduce us to new things.

We went to lunch at a cute little sushi place and I got a california temaki roll.
It was so good!

Jour deux

So yesterday was exhausting and I am happy to say that today is slightly better.  Yesterday when I arrived at the airport, I met the arrival team and they brought us to the school.  After a very short (thank god) overview of housing they took us to our various apartments.  I unpacked for a while and set up my room and then we went exploring around our neighborhood.  At 5pm we had a gathering at the school where everyone from the program got to meet each other and eat crepes.  yumm :)  After that, my roommates and I walked around for a while and found Notre Dame which is near my school.  Then we went home very tired and I can't say that I've ever been so happy to see a bed that wasn't my own.

This morning we met at the school at 9am and had a welcome orientation presentation.  Then, we split into groups and went out for lunch.  We had vegetable quiche and then crepes for desert.  I got a dark chocolate filled one... soooo good.  And the best part was that the school paid, yay.  Then we went on a  little tour around the latin quarter before heading back.

All in all it's been an exhausting first couple of days, but I'm so excited to be here!!  I have nothing for the rest of the night but we start again at 9 tomorrow morning.

Paris Living :)

I am here and I am barely conscious.  I have been up for 28 hours and I can't believe I'm functioning.
I don't have the energy to write much but here are some pictures of my apartment :)

D'argent

I just got some Euros for the first couple of days and finally picked up my passport from the French Consulate with my new student visa inside.  What a nightmare that was, but thankfully it is all over and I can focus on packing and saying my goodbyes.

French money is so pretty :)

Procrastinating

So my suitcase is huge which is comforting because I'm freakin out about fitting everything. Unfortunately, I'm a tiny person and I'm probably going to fall over trying to wheel this thing. My dad said I could fit in it so my brother and I decided to test that theory...

and so it begins...

The thought of packing my whole life into two suitcases for four months is terrifying.  That's probably why I have put it off for so long.  Unfortunately, now I'm leaving in four days and I haven't even started.... ekkk!!

This is my ridiculously overstuffed closet which is not making my task any easier.  So many options... and of course, I'm going to want to bring all of it.

Somehow I have to fit everything into two of these...

Whose idea was this study abroad thing anyway?
